Plantlife members taken on tour of special pinewood plants

Andy talks to Plantlife membersJune 2011. Eleven Plantlife members, along with Plantlife outreach officer Matilda Scharsach, were treated to a tour of some of the Park’s special pinewood plant sites this month by project officer Andy Scobie.

The day commenced in Curr Wood where members were first shown a range of common pinewood herbs before moving onto the main attraction - Twinflower! A brisk walk round the wood and a tour of the main sites enabled discussion of the key conservation issues faced by Twinflower and other pinewood herbs along with a demonstration of the trials which Plantlife Scotland and Forest Research are currently conducting in the wood to investigate the impact of felling and timber extraction on the growth and spread of Twinflower.

The afternoon was spent in Upper Port Wood where Twinflower, Common Wintergreen and Intermediate Wintergreen obliged us by putting on a fantastic flowering display! Here participants got to grips with identification of Wintergreens using floral and vegetative characters. Download the Identification Guide if you would like to learn more about Wintergreen identification.
